OCTOBER 2011 -- Volkswagen is recalling certain model 2009-2012 Jetta and Jetta Sportwagen vehicles, manufactured from May 2008 through September 2011, model year 2010-2012 Volkswagen Golf vehicles, manufactured from May 2009 through September 2011, and model year 2010-2012 Audi A3 vehicles, manufactured from September 2009 through September 2011, that are equipped with a 2.0L TDI common rail diesel engine/clean diesel engine. The fuel injection pulses could coincide with the natural frequency of the injector line #2, in specific load and rpm conditions. This resonance creates additional stress in the fuel line. Due to the resonance condition, injector line number 2 could develop small cracks which could lead to fuel leakage. Leaking fuel in the presence of an ignition source, may lead to a fire. Volkswagen will install an improved fuel injector line for the number 2 cylinder on certain vehicles and will install vibration dampers on all of the injector lines. Volkswagen and Audi will notify owners to have the vehicles repaired free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin during November 2011.   11V-490

NEWS:   VW recalls 168,000 cars for fuel leaks, Jetta, Golf, Audi A3

YAHOO NEWS -- October 6,  2011 – Volkswagen is recalling 168,275 cars equipped with diesel engines because of a defect in the fuel injection system that could cause fuel leaks and fires.

The recall affects certain 2009-2012 Jetta midsize cars, and some 2010 through 2012 Golf small cars, as well as some Audi A3 models from the 2010 through 2012 model years, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Thursday on its website. All are equipped with 2-liter TDI diesel engines.

Cracks can develop in the fuel injection system and cause fuel to leak, possibly causing fires, VW said in documents filed with federal safety regulators.

However, the company said in the documents that it doesn't know of any fires, crashes or injuries caused by the problem.

Fuel injectors squirt fuel into the cylinder, where it is ignited. The resulting explosion pushes the pistons, which move to power the cars. On some of the VW diesels, a vibration given off by the injectors can cause stress that eventually can lead to cracks in the injector fuel lines, VW said.

Volkswagen will replace a fuel injector line in some models and install dampers to cut the vibrations on all of them. The repairs will be made free of charge. The recall is expected to start in November, NHTSA said.

The recall includes 161,144 Golf and Jetta models and another 7,131 Audi A3s.

The Jettas, including SportWagens, were made from May 2008 through September of 2011, while the Golfs were made from May of 2009 through September of 2011. The A3 models were made from September of 2009 through September of 2011.

About 20 percent of the cars built during those time periods will need to have fuel lines replaced, and all will the vehicles will get the vibration dampers, VW said.

More than 20 percent of the Volkswagens sold in the U.S. have diesel engines.

NEWS:   VW recalls 30,000 Jettas to fix long tailpipes

YAHOO NEWS -- September 12,  2011 – Volkswagen is recalling more than 30,000 Jetta sedans from the 2011 and 2012 model years because the tailpipes can stick out too far and burn people.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says on its website that stainless steel exhaust pipe tips installed at ports of entry and dealerships can stick out farther than the factory-installed tailpipes.

If the tips are hot, people could be burned on the legs.

Documents on the website say Volkswagen received complaints of burns in July and began investigating. Volkswagen said Monday that fewer than 10 people have complained of burns, but a specific number wasn't available.

Dealers will inspect the cars to see if the exhaust tips are too long and replace them free of charge if necessary.

SEPTEMBER 2011 -- Volkswagen is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Jetta sedan vehicles manufactured from March 18, 2010, through August 22, 2011. Some vehicles had a stainless steel exhaust tip installed at the port during importation. These exhaust tips may extend beyond the original length of the factory-installed exhaust pipes. It is possible for inadvertent contact to occur with a person's leg. If the tailpipe extension is hot during inadvertent contact, a burn could occur. Dealers will inspect and replace the stainless steel exhaust tips as necessary free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin during November 2011.  . 11V-466

SEPTEMBER 2011 -- Volkswagen is recalling certain stainless steel exhaust tips, Part Number 1K0 071 910 U, sold as accessory equipment for use on model year 2011-2012 Jetta sedan vehicles manufactured from March 18, 2010, through August 22, 2011. These exhaust tips may extend beyond the original length of the factoryinstalled exhaust pipes. It is possible for inadvertent contact to occur with a person's leg. If the tailpipe extension is hot during inadvertent contact, a burn could occur. Dealers will inspect and replace thestainless steel exhaust tips as necessary free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin during November 2011. . Volkswagen's safety recall number is 26G9/V4. 11E-036

MARCH 2011 -- Volkswagen is recalling certain model year 2011 Jetta vehicles, manufactured from March 2010 through March 2011. These vehicles may have an electrical wiring and fuse layout where the converter box is protected by the same fuse used by the signal horn and the anti-theft alarm system. Should that fuse be blown, the converter box will be disconnected from the power supply which, in turn, will shut off applications such as the engine management system, lighting system, and wipers. Should this happen while the vehicle is being driven, the engine could stall, or the headlights or wipers could turn off unexpectedly, potentially leading to a crash without warning. Volkswagen will notify owners when sufficient quantities of repairs kits are available. Dealers will separate the wiring for the horn and the theft protection horn from the power supply of the converter box and route the wires to separate fuses to correct the condition free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin during May 2011.    11V-196

NEWS:   VW recalls about 71,000 Jettas for Horn wiring issue

YAHOO NEWS -- March 11,  2011 – Volkswagen AG's U.S. unit recalled more than 71,000 Jetta sedans due to a defect in the wiring system controlling the car horn that can cause the car to stall, a company spokeswoman said on Monday.

The wiring layout that controls the horn also controls the converter box, which governs the engine management system, lighting system and wipers.

In "very rare" circumstances, an electrical short in the horn could cause a short in the converter box and could make the vehicle stall, VW spokeswoman...said.

VW said in a statement that 71,043 Jettas for the model year 2011 are affected by the recall. VW said there have been no reported injuries and accidents related to this defect.

The Jettas were built between March 2010 and March 2011.

NEWS:   Volkswagen recalls more than 228,000 cars in US

YAHOO NEWS -- December 15,  2010 –  Volkswagen has recalled more than 228,000 vehicles in the United States amid fears that faults could cause the vehicles' engines to catch fire.

The German carmaker recalled Jetta, Jetta Sportwagen, Golf and Rabbit models manufactured between 2007 and 2009 due to a small plastic tab that could cause a leak in the fuel pipe, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said in a statement.

VW further recalled the New Beetle and New Beetle convertible vehicles equipped with 2.5 liter engines made between 2006 and 2010, which have a clamp in the power steering system that could also pierce the fuel supply line.

"If chafing occurs, there is the potential for a fuel leak to develop. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in fire," the NHTSA said.

Some 228,236 cars could be affected by the recall, it said.

DECEMBER 2010 - Volkswagen is recalling certain model year 2006-2010 Jetta, New Beetle, New Beetle Convertible, model year 2009 Jetta Sportwagen and model year 2007-2009 Rabbit vehicles equipped with 2.5L engines. The Jetta, Jetta Sportwagen, and Rabbit vehicles may have a small plastic tab located on the windshield washer fluid reservoir that may chafe against an underhood fuel supply line. The new beetle and the new beetle convertible vehicles may have a fastening clamp on a hydraulic hose of the power steering system that may be located in an improper position which could cause chafing against an underhood fuel supply line. If chafing occurs, there is the potential for a fuel leak to develop. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire. Dealers will inspect and if necessary replace the underhood fuel line. Additionally, depending on the vehicle model, dealers will either remove the plastic tab from the windshield washer fluid reservoir, or inspect the position of the fastening clamp and adjust the related fastening clamp into the correct position. This service will be performed free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin on or before January 31, 2011 10V-621

AUGUST 2009 -- Volkswagen is recalling certain model year 2009 and 2010 passenger cars manufactured between September 2008 and August 2009. The wiring harness of a temperature sensor in the direct shift gearbox (DSG) may have connector wires that were insufficiently crimped. With insufficiently crimped connector wires, a temperature sensor has the potential to falsely detect a high gearbox oil temperature, causing the transmission to abruptly shift to neutral. If this happens, the selector lever position indicator within the instrument panel will flash. In addition, the "Depress Brake Pedal" indicator light will be illuminated, alerting the driver to apply the brakes. The abrupt shift to neutral could lead to a crash without warning. Volkswagen will notify owners, inspect the DSG and, if necessary, replace an affected DSG temperature sensor free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule.  09V-333

NEWS:  VW recalling 13,500 vehicles over transmission

August 20, 2009 -- Yahoo News -- WASHINGTON – Volkswagen of America is recalling 13,500 vehicles to fix problems with a dual-clutch transmission that could lead to a warning on the dashboard.

The recall affects 2009 model year and a limited number of 2010 Jetta, Jetta SportsWagen, GTI and Eos vehicles built between September 2008 and August 2009. Volkswagen says some of the vehicles could have a faulty temperature sensor in the transmission, which could lead to the warning lamp lighting up on the dashboard. They said in rare cases, the transmission could shift into neutral.

MAY 2009 --  Volkswagen is recalling 25,594 MY 2006-2009 Jetta 5th generation equipped with 2.01 engine. The fastening screw contact surfaces on the driveshaft cover plate may not have been manufactured to factory specifications.  Some screws may not have been torqued properly during assembly and could loosen over time, causing a knocking sound when the vehicle is in motion. The driveshaft screws could loosen to the point where the driveshaft detaches from the gearbox. If the vehicle is moving when this happens, the detached driveshaft could cause damage the gearbox housing. A damage gearbox housing could leak gearbox oil onto the street and create a risk of a vehicle crash for both the driver and other motorists. Dealers will inspect the driveshaft screws and replace the screws free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on or before June 19, 2009. O  09V-164

SEPTEMBER 2007 -- VW is recalling 340,000 MY 2005-2008 Jetta and MY 2006-2008 Rabbit, GTI, and R32 vehicles for failing to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment." Some vehicles may not have had a required cap installed which disables the headlight horizontal aim and some vehicles may contain a cap that disables the vertical aiming screw. Noncompliance can inhibit proper headlamp aim adjustment for roadway illumination. Improperly aimed headlamps could cause reduced road visibility, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will inspect for the presence of a cap in the socket of the low beam horizontal aiming screw and install one if missing, and inspect for the presence of a cap in the socket of the vertical aiming screw and if present, the cap will be removed. The recall is expected to begin on or about October 31, 2007. This recall was the subject of an investigation, OA-108-070412I, conducted by the Office of Vehicle Safety Compliance. 07V442
